Maslow & The Hierarchy

For this project, I worked collaboratively with ITP peers Mashi and Lily to develop a series of animations fusing the color theory of Josef Albers with the motivational theories of Abraham Maslow. The resulting project, which we called “Maslow & The Hierarchy, is a series of AR-compatible gifs that illustrate a blob, Maslow, on a journey from eating its first meal to having its first moment of self-actualization. For accessibility purposes, we added patterns to stills of each animation and printed them using an ink-reactive printer to create a haptic component. As Maslow fulfills more of its needs, the outer color of the background is shed, suggesting a progression up the internal “pyramid”.
